Do .....	Assure the puppy of your love, with this assurance and security he can learn
	almost anything.

Do .....	Be gentle, the young puppy is helpless against rough treatment. His reaction to
such is fear, which may eventually turn into bad temper.

Do .....	Be patient, the puppy can’t speak English, but if you give him time he will
	understand a great deal.

Do ..... Give the puppy time to be by himself and rest. A puppy plays hard, grows rapidly and will require
	a great amount of rest.

Do .....	Keep your sense of humor. The puppy and his mistakes are frequently funny
if you take them with good nature.

Do .....	Give the puppy toys of his own, and take time for fun and games. It is good
for you as well as the puppy.

Do .....	Be fair. Make certain the puppy understands just what you expect of him.

Do.....	Be generous with praise and pats to reward him for mastering lessons.

Do .....	Enjoy your puppy. His little mistakes are nothing compared to the fun and
companionship he will give you if you establish a good relationship from the start.

Do .....	Reserve a special place for the puppy where it is safe and quiet for him to relax.

BUT .....

Don’t ..... Tie your puppy. He can chew through most leads. If he can't, he can
	become entangled or injured.

Don’t .....	Drop the puppy

Don’t .....	Allow young children to pick up the puppy. Encourage the to sit on the floor
	to play with the puppy.

Don’t .....	Ever tease a puppy

Don’t .....	Leave the puppy any place from which he can jump or fall. Puppies have no
	knowledge of height.

Don’t .....	Ever punish a frightened puppy, it only increases his fear and ruins his natural mentality.
Be gentle, quiet, and reassuring and above all patient with a frightened dog.

Don’t .....	Fail to correct a mis-deed on the spot. Habits become easily established,
good ones as well as bad ones.

Don’t .....	Scream, Run at, Hit or Throw things at the puppy, for these can develop
	defensive biting behavior.

Don’t .....	Ever pick up the puppy by his front legs and shoulders, or by the scruff of his neck.
Always support the hind quarters when lifting or putting the puppy down.
Never allow the hind quarters to hang loose, and never drop the puppy
	on his hind quarters.
